How Does Data Center Cooling Work?

Date:2026-10-08

As data centers continue to support cloud computing, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and digital services, managing the heat generated by IT equipment has become a critical part of data center design. Servers, storage systems, networking equipment, and GPUs continuously generate heat during operation. If this heat is not removed efficiently, excessive temperatures can reduce equipment performance, shorten component life, and affect overall data center reliability.

A data center cooling system is designed to continuously remove heat from IT equipment and maintain suitable temperature and humidity conditions inside the facility. Depending on the data center size, rack density, climate, and cooling requirements, different cooling technologies can be used.

How Does Data Center Cooling Work?

Although data center cooling systems can have different configurations, the basic process is similar: heat is generated by IT equipment, transferred to a cooling medium, transported away from the data center, and finally rejected to the outdoor environment.

The cooling process can generally be divided into several stages.

1. IT Equipment Generates Heat

Almost all electrical energy consumed by servers and other IT equipment is eventually converted into heat. Traditional server racks may generate moderate heat loads, while AI servers and high-performance computing systems can produce significantly higher heat densities.

As rack power increases, conventional room-level cooling may become less effective. This is why modern data centers increasingly require carefully designed cooling systems based on actual rack density and heat load.

2. Cooling Systems Remove Heat from the IT Environment

Cooling equipment removes heat from the server room or directly from IT equipment.

For conventional data centers, precision air conditioning, air handling units, and other air-based cooling systems can circulate conditioned air through the IT space. Cool air is supplied to server racks, absorbs heat from the equipment, and returns as warmer air to the cooling system.

Proper airflow management is important for maintaining cooling efficiency. Cold aisles, hot aisles, containment systems, and optimized airflow distribution can help reduce the mixing of supply and return air.

3. Heat Is Transferred to a Cooling Medium

Once heat is collected, it needs to be transferred through the cooling system.

In an air-cooled system, air acts as the primary medium for transporting heat away from the IT equipment. In chilled-water systems, water or a water-glycol mixture can transport heat between cooling equipment and heat exchangers.

For high-density applications, liquid cooling can provide a more direct method of heat removal. Technologies such as direct-to-chip cooling and liquid-to-liquid cooling use liquid to transfer heat away from high-performance computing equipment.

4. Heat Is Rejected Outside the Data Center

After collecting heat, the cooling system needs to release it to the surrounding environment.

Depending on the system design, heat rejection equipment may include:
(1)Dry coolers
(2)Air-cooled chillers
(3)Cooling towers

For example, in a chilled-water data center cooling system, a chiller produces chilled water that circulates through the cooling loop. The chilled water absorbs heat through cooling equipment or heat exchangers and returns at a higher temperature. The chiller then removes this heat before the chilled water is circulated again.

A dry cooler can also be used to reject heat from a water or water-glycol loop without relying on direct evaporative cooling. This can be useful for applications where water consumption, maintenance, or environmental conditions are important considerations.

Why Is Data Center Cooling So Important?

A properly designed cooling system supports both equipment reliability and energy efficiency.

Effective data center cooling helps to:
(1)Maintain suitable operating temperatures for IT equipment
(2)Prevent overheating and thermal hotspots
(3)Improve equipment reliability
(4)Support higher rack power densities
(5)Reduce unnecessary energy consumption
(6)Improve overall data center efficiency
(7)Provide stable operating conditions for critical infrastructure

Cooling can also have a significant impact on Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). An optimized cooling system can reduce the amount of energy required for non-IT infrastructure and contribute to a more efficient data center operation.

How to Choose a Data Center Cooling System

There is no single cooling solution suitable for every data center. System selection should consider several factors, including:
(1)Total IT load
(2)Rack power density
(3)Required cooling capacity
(4)Ambient temperature
(5)Data center size and layout
(6)Available installation space
(7)Water availability
(8)Cooling redundancy requirements
(9)Energy efficiency targets
(10)Future expansion requirements

For high-density AI applications, additional factors such as liquid flow rate, coolant type, supply and return temperatures, and CDU capacity may also need to be evaluated.

SHENGLIN Data Center Cooling Solutions

SHENGLIN provides cooling equipment and integrated solutions for different data center applications, including  dry coolers, air cooled condensers, air handling units, and container data centers.

By combining appropriate cooling equipment with project-specific system design, SHENGLIN can support data centers with different cooling capacities, rack densities, installation environments, and expansion requirements.

As data center infrastructure continues to evolve toward higher computing density and greater energy efficiency, selecting the right cooling architecture is becoming increasingly important. From conventional air cooling to advanced liquid cooling and hybrid systems, an effective data center cooling solution should be designed around the actual heat load, operating environment, and long-term requirements of the facility.
